Geographic information science represents a field of research that focuses on environmental concepts by using geographic information systems. The technology organizes detailed map data in a straightforward manner so that people can then select relevant information for their tasks, helping them make better decisions. The GIS has become an extremely useful assessment tool for planning and management for businesses, government agencies, education settings and economic development.
Clients recognize Hatch for its ability to bridge the gaps between research and innovative technologies, and between engineering and reliable operations. They are particularly known for working with senior client management to develop business strategies; managing and optimizing production; executing projects that involve the scale-up of process technologies; and managing start-ups, commissioning and ramp-ups.
The Niagara Region is represented by the Niagara Falls Hatch Department which is primarily focused on environmental research, geophysical and geotechnical investigations.
Data collected for geotechnical investigations are currently presented in a variety of formats including borehole logs, test pit logs, geophysical surveys and sampling results in gINT a geotechnical based softwarelocational mapping in AutoCAD and ArcGIS, digital photographs stored on the Hatch network.
Hatch would like to implement a unified procedure for displaying, querying and presenting geotechnical data. Initially, it has been decided to remove the dam and rehabilitate the existing dam pond and surrounding lands. However, it has been found further that the removal of a dam without implementation of a sediment management plan exposes the deposited sediment to the erosive effects of water.
As a result, it can cause the sediment to be discharged downstream in uncontrolled amounts.
Uncontrolled release of sediment could have adverse effects on the natural environment e. Environmental assessment has been done and client received the data collected for geotechnical investigations.
Data are currently presented in a variety of formats including borehole logs, test pit logs, geophysical locational mapping using AutoCAD and ArcGIS, and digital photographs stored on the Hatch network.
Hatch would like to implement a unified procedure for displaying, querying, and presenting the geotechnical data. Though the company is young, it provides al fresh professional prospective of the GIS field in general.
